Well...we made it to a new country. It took over 700km of our blood, sweat and..... more sweat!!!!. There were no tears...well not yet anyway!!!....Although.....we have bets on who will "break" first. Thailand has been an emmensely enjoyable experience. From tuk-tuks to street food on Bangkoks nototrious Khoa San road, we have seen the everything from sleazy to the most pure & natural of living. The thoughts of leaving the "land of smiles" makes us feel a little apprehensive to be honest as for the entire duration of our Thailand to Laos stint, we have recieved nothing less than sheer generosity, enthusiasm and positive vibes from all the towns we passed through. We hope that Laos will be similar as we weave in and around its jungle terrain. We are really looking forward to our Laos - China adventures.....Thailand has been relatively inexpensive with stuff like a meal for 3 with drinks costing about 250-300 Thai Baht or approx 6 euro)...Similarly hotels and hostels being v-reasonable weighing in at about 4-6 euro for the 3 of us...Not bad while it lasts we reckon.
To sum up Thailand in a more executive style.... and to make it more interesting for you, we have decided to close out our experiences in a quick fire buzzer fashion....Enjoy!!!!
Our Highest Point: Toss up between our School Term on days 8&9 and our adventures with Komsan and the rats on steroids (day 6)....Lots of other highs but they really stick out as great memories.
Our Lowest Point: This was pretty unanimous...Hands down winner was (drum roll)Day 3 for us....Our bad night's camping on New Years Eve and the next morning's cycle, coupled with our poor breakfast preparation had left the three of us (with a meer 4km to the nearest town. Tha Luang) "dying at the roadside".....Laughing about it now...we had not wanted to admitt tiredness/chronic fatigue to one another until our lunch in Tha Luang....We are much better now though...
Our Favourite food: Moo & Cow (pretty much rice and pork with stir fried vegetables)...Very tasty and really really cheap....
Best Quotes:
"Oh God, what is going wrong with our bikes lads?" Brian on day 1 about those darn punctures!!
"I think Im going to die" Paul on day 2 after a monster hill
"So I went up to Edinburgh......' This Scotish guy we met who told us (in great great detail) about his woes arranging an Indian Visa.....Trying to stay awake while trying to look intersted is hard work!!!!
"Im in trouble lads" Brian on Day 10 realising (after a short period of time) that those nice little road side banana fritters which we all horsed into us were now causing him to experience unusual "bowel/stomach" sounds. Very funny for Mike and myself...Sorry Brian!!!
The most bizarre obsersvations: The guy fishing whilst standing in a tyre tube with a steel basin in the middle....Took a picture of him and he wobbled back and foward before finally steadying himself....Incidentally he did all this whilst smiling...Check out the gallery and youll come across this dude!!! Remarkable.
Mike spotted about 20 people literally loaded onto a tuk tuk. These tuk tuk's can carry a max of 8!!!!
Songs that pulled us through: The three of us have ipods for this journey which we use from time to time on the road. Our top road songs so far have been
Paul: Old town by Phil Lynott, Daniel by Elton John, Renegade Master (Fat boy slim remix), Backwards Marathon by Between the buried and me, Bad Penny by Rory Gallagher, Endless Love by Lionel Richie..
Brian: Revolver by the Beatles, Endless love by Lionel Richie, Well I guess thats why they call it the blues by Elton John, Tattoed Lady by Rory Gallagher
Michael: Only the lonely by Roy Orbison (we also like The Commitments version), Horris Whimp by ELO, Up on Cripple Creek by "The Band!!!
